Street Maintenance Worker Part- Time

The Town of Granite Falls is seeking a results and service oriented individual to fill the position of Part-Time Street Maintenance Worker. Granite Falls, (approximate population 5,000) is located in the western piedmont area of Western North Carolina and is part of the Hickory Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), the sixth largest MSA in the state. Granite Falls is located approximately 40 miles southeast of Boone, 65 miles northwest of Charlotte, and 70 miles east of Asheville, and is the southernmost municipality in Caldwell County, bordering Lake Hickory and Lake Rhodhiss on the southern and western sides of town, respectively. Major transportation routes serving the Town include US 321 and US 321A, which run north and south through the Town and Interstate 40 located approximately 5 miles south in the City of Hickory. The Town has a council-manager form of government, consisting of a mayor and six councilmembers, each elected on a non-partisan basis to serve staggered four-year-terms.

The Part-Time Street Maintenance Worker will work approximately 16 hours per week. This position performs a variety of semi-skilled and unskilled manual labor tasks in the construction, maintenance, and repair of streets and other facilities. Work involves driving dump trucks and operating light to medium equipment; patching asphalt; installing and repairing street signs; collecting yard waste, furniture, and appliances; cleaning storm drains and catch basins; reading water and electric meters; assisting in minor repair of equipment and vehicles; applying herbicides, removing trees and trimmings, snow removal; mowing and right-of-way maintenance; and other related tasks. Employee is subject to hazards associated with street maintenance and repair work including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, in and around heavy equipment, and exposure to noise, atmospheric conditions, and tight quarters. Work is performed under regular supervision in accordance with specific instructions and within defined procedures and is reviewed while in progress and upon completion for adherence to instructions and standards.

Education and Experience Requirements:

Graduation from high school, or possession of General Education Diploma, and some experience in the use of hand tools, equipment, construction, and working outdoors is preferred; Possession of a Class C Driver’s License is required; ability to obtain North Carolina Class B Commercial Driver’s License is preferred.

Compensation and Benefits:

The Town of Granite Falls offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience and qualifications. The starting hourly rate is $16.74 per hour.
