The Town has a council-manager form of government, consisting of a mayor and six councilmembers, each elected on a non-partisan basis to serve staggered four-year-terms. The Town provides a full range of municipal services with a current budget over 19 million.

The Police Sergeant will be supervising the activities associated with a squad or platoon within the Police Department while performing law enforcement work. Supervisory responsibilities include managing the daily work activities of the assigned unit, conducting employee performance counseling and evaluation, ensuring proper training, making assignments, scheduling court dates, time off, off-duty assignments and training, and providing technical direction on matters related to patrol and policing. Work is distinguished from lower-level jobs by the degree of experience and training required to perform the tasks and by the degree of supervision, independent judgement, and discretion exercised. Work requires the application of modern law enforcement techniques, sound judgment, and independent initiative in pursuit of work objectives. Work involves frequent public contact which requires tact, firmness, and decisiveness. Work is performed in accordance with departmental policy and state and federal law, supplemented with specific directions from superior officers.
Education and Experience Requirements:
• Graduation from high school or possession of GED and 40 hours of supervisory training and special training in criminal investigations, and considerable experience in law enforcement; or an equivalent of combination of education and experience.
- Possession of a valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License.
- Completion of the minimum requirements established by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission for certified law enforcement officers.
- Possession of Basic Law Enforcement Certification.
Compensation and Benefits:
The Town of Granite Falls offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience and qualifications. The starting pay for this position is $57,596.10 which includes a base salary of $55,054.94 and holiday pay of $2541.16. The Town provides a comprehensive benefits package including health, dental, vision, long term disability, and life insurance; Local Government Employees Retirement System (LGERS) contribution and 5% 401(k) employer contribution; annual vacation, sick leave, and paid holidays. Additional benefits include bereavement, education reimbursement, and longevity pay.
