Firefighter

The Town of Granite Falls is seeking a service-oriented professional who is passionate about supporting the mission to protect the life and property of the citizens of Granite Falls through prevention, education, and mitigation services delivered with pride and integrity to fill our Firefighter position. Granite Falls (approximate population 5,000) is located in the western piedmont area of Western North Carolina and is part of the Hickory Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), the sixth largest MSA in the state. Granite Falls is located approximately 40 miles southeast of Boone, 65 miles northwest of Charlotte, and 70 miles east of Asheville, and borders Lake Hickory and Lake Rhodhiss on the southern and western sides of town, respectively. Major transportation routes serving the Town include US 321 and US 321A, which run north and south through the Town and Interstate 40 located approximately 5 miles south in the City of Hickory. The Town has a council-manager form of government, consisting of a mayor and six councilmembers, each elected on a non-partisan basis to serve staggered four-year terms. The Town provides a full range of municipal services with a current budget of over $19 million.

 

The Firefighter participates in the operations of fire suppression and incident response personnel and operations at the fire station. The employee participates in incident response, including emergency medical service, operation of fire apparatus, firefighting, technical rescue, hazardous materials response/mitigation, and equipment and facilities maintenance. The employee also participates in incidence response and fire suppression training. Work requires that the employee stay abreast of state-of-the-art fire suppression and rescue procedures, techniques, and equipment and requires the employee to incorporate the necessary changes into in-service training. Most possess the ability to make effective decisions under pressure is required in all aspects of work. Work is performed in potentially dangerous situations and is performed in inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold temperatures, loud noise, vibration, moving parts, high heat, chemical, fumes, odors, dust, gases, poor ventilation, oils, wearing respirators, and working in close quarters. The employee is also subject to the final OSHA standards on blood borne pathogens. Work is performed under regular supervision and is evaluated through observation, conferences, and written reports concerning the quality and effectiveness of work completed.

 

The Firefighter’s shift schedule is 24/72.

 

Graduation from high school, or possession of General Education Diploma, supplemented by courses and seminars in fire service and considerable experience in fire service; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Possession of North Carolina State Firefighter Certification. Possession of North Carolina Class B Driver’s License, North Carolina Emergency Medical Technician and North Carolina Technical Rescuer Certification, or ability to obtain within 12 months of hire date or appointment.

 

The Town of Granite Falls offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience and qualifications. The starting pay for this position is $40,932.52, which includes a base salary of $39,126.52 and holiday pay totaling $1,806.00. The Town provides a comprehensive benefits package including health, dental, vision, long term disability, and life insurance; Local Government Employees Retirement System (LGERS) contribution; annual vacation and sick leave. Additional benefits include parental leave, education reimbursement, and longevity pay.
